How to Bleach Dark Jeans

Denim jeans are usually dyed a shade of indigo. Although indigo jeans have been popular for decades, the actual shades of indigo come in and out of fashion. Dark indigo has become more common in recent years, just as it had been popular a generation ago. However, if you would like to bleach your dark indigo jeans to make them vintage-looking light jeans, you can easily do so at home. Bleaching blue jeans will give them a lighter appearance, as the dark blue fades into light blue.

Instructions

    1

Rinse your jeans under water and wring them out.

    2

Place them flat on the ground. It is best to bleach your jeans outside to prevent your home from smelling like bleach.

    3

Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Pour some bleach onto a cloth. Wipe the bleach on the cloth onto your jeans. Make sure to completely dampen the areas you want to bleach with the cloth.

    4

Scrub the areas you want to make lighter using a scrubbing brush. This will help work the bleach into the jeans and give the surface a more worn look.

    5

Leave the jeans to dry for 10 minutes. Place the jeans in the washing machine without any soap and run them through a full wash cycle to remove the bleach. Dry them in the dryer or hang dry.
