How do I Make a Skirt From Blue Jeans?

Chances are you have a much-loved pair of blue jeans that are past their used-by date as jeans, but would make a great skirt. The beauty of making a skirt from a pair of blue jeans is that the tricky bits -- the waist, pockets and zipper are already done for you, so you can just add the skirt portion without fussing about those details.

Instructions

    1

Cut your jeans off at the crotch, which should be just below the back pockets on most jeans. You can either use the legs of the jeans to make the skirt, or add new patterned or colored fabric to have a contrasting denim skirt.

    2

Measure the circumference of the cut-off part of the jeans. Cut a length of fabric (or denim from the jean legs) that is 1 1/2 times the circumference of the cut-off portion of the jeans and around 8 inches wide (this can vary depending on how long you want the overall length of the skirt).

    3

Sew along one long edge of the piece of material, then pull the thread to gather the material until that edge is the same length as the original circumference of the jeans. Distribute the gathering evenly along the edge, then pin the material strip to the cut-off edge of the jeans right-sides together, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    4

Sew along the seam to join this tier to the jeans. Cut a second tier that is 1 1/2 times longer than the first, and gather one edge as you did the first tier. Attach it in the same manner to the tier, so that there are two tiers from the jeans. If you want a short skirt, two tiers is enough, or you can continue adding tiers until the desired length is reached.

    5

Fold a double 1/4-inch seam over on the hem of the last tier and sew down to finish the blue jeans skirt.
