How to Match Denim Pants

Almost everyone has at least one pair of favorite denim pants that they enjoy wearing from time to time. Occasionally, however, you may want to wear another piece of denim clothing with your jeans. While it's perfectly acceptable to choose pieces that match exactly, it's not your only option. You can also combine pieces in varying shades and colors of denim that work well together.

Exact Matches

When you already own the denim pants you want to match another piece to, finding something in the exact same shade can be tricky. Your best bet is to wear the denim slacks to the store while shopping. That way you can try on the pieces to see if they coordinately perfectly. Alternatively, you may want to start from scratch and purchase two matching pieces made by the same company or designer.

Darker Denim

When your denim pants are dark blue, choose denim in a considerably lighter shade to wear with them. To balance out a bigger bottom, choose a denim jacket or shirt in a lighter shade of blue to wear atop your navy jeans. If you'd rather, choose a denim vest in a shade that's lighter than your jeans and wear a plaid shirt underneath it. Opt for a shirt that combines the two shades of blue in its design to pull the two pieces together seamlessly.

Lighter Denim

Faded blue jeans are some of the most-loved denim pants around. They often fit your curves like a second skin and show off your assets in a positive way. Choose a dark blue jean jacket to top off your well-worn favorites. Wear a red T-shirt underneath for a pop of color or a white, button-up blouse with a chunky, silver and turquoise necklace. For business casual day at the office, opt for a navy denim blazer with distinctive buttons to show off your style.

White Denim

While we often think in shades of blue when it comes to denim, you may want to match a pair of white denim slacks. Choose a matching white jacket for a crisp, clean look, and add a lavender or pink sweater underneath it for a feminine ensemble. When you want a look that pops with white denim jeans, choose a colored, denim cap in orange or green. Select tennis shoes in the same color as the cap for a sporty, dramatic look.
