A new, green fashion frenzy has taken the world by storm in the form of organic cotton. As consumers learn more and more about the world's agricultural industry and its impacts, they crave clothing that comes with a guilt-free tag. Natural clothing companies are filling the void with organic cotton denim in the form of America's favorite pant, the jean. Maybe your next favorite pair of jeans will also be your most natural.

Why Organic

The fibers we use to create clothing like denim are agricultural products. The Environmental News Network writes that each pair of jeans grown under commercial conditions requires two-thirds of a pound of pesticides to produce. Not only does using pesticides in fields contaminate water and poison plants and animals, but pesticides have also been linked to cancer, birth defects and acute toxicity. Since organic cotton is produced without pesticides, cut out some of the danger and support organic agriculture in your way by purchasing organic clothing.

Styles and Brands

No matter what your personal style preferences may be, there is a style of organic jeans out there for you. The organic clothing market has boomed in the last couple decades. In The Ecologist's list of their top ten design brands for organic denim, Nudie is number one. It's a clothing brand that brings fashion and organic denim together for chicks who want to look chic while being environmentally friendly. Number two is Ruby Rocks, a fair trade natural clothing company that is based out of London's fashion distinct. Ranking at number four is Howies, which designs with comfort in mind for the eco-friendly woman and boasts a number of styles.

Care and Maintenance

The care and maintenance of organic jeans is along the same lines as non-organic jeans. Wear jeans for as long as possible before washing them. When you do wash organic denim jeans, turn them inside out and wash them in cold water. Hang dry jeans or tumble dry them. Keep in mind that denim (organic or not) is cotton, and your jeans will shrink during the first two or three washes. Keep this in mind when purchasing denim jeans and always wait till after the first wash to hem them or take them in. The first time you wash your jeans, wash them separately because the blue color may bleed into other clothing.

Denim or not

Brandish TV published an article in January of 2011 titled "The Death of Organic Denim." Originally when consumers became aware the cotton agriculture uses 25 percent of the world's pesticides, they wanted an organic alternative. If you're going to wear cotton, organic cotton is the way to do but industry leaders soon found that there were other considerations. Cotton production also uses a vast amount of water and quickly deteriorates soil. The environmental impact of dyes that are used to create cotton clothing are becoming detrimental. A good alternative to cotton denim is hemp, which is a renewable resource that impacts the environment significantly less than cotton.
