If you're a petite--5'4" and under--woman, finding a pair of great-fitting jeans can be a challenge. But when you do find them, there's yet another hurdle to overcome--making sure they don't chop inches off your apparent height. But take heart that with so many different cuts of jeans in style right now, you can easily find one that is flattering and even makes you look taller.
Cuts of Jeans
The array of jean cuts that are fashionable now can be dizzying. Styles available in petite sizes include the skinny cigarette jean, the slightly flared boot cut, the more relaxed straight leg, the trendy boyfriend jean, and the dressier trouser jean. A petite size jean is proportioned to fit a shorter woman and features a lower waistline and shorter inseam. While no single cut looks universally best on petite figures, you should choose one that suits your body type and pay attention to detailing and color.
What to Avoid
Knowing what to avoid is as important as finding a good fit. Petites should stay away from anything that creates a strong horizontal line across the leg, such as capris, cropped jeans and cuffed hems. While a wide leg can work for a petite, say no to extra-wide styles that can make you appear stocky. Make sure the length is right, too; the hem of your jeans should just skim the top of your shoe. Wearing anything longer will make you look shorter.
Choosing the Right Cut for Your Figure
If you're very slim, you'll look great in skinny jeans, especially those with a higher waist. Curvier petites can opt for a bootcut jean with a low or mid rise that accentuates the hips. Plus size petites should choose a straight-leg style that offers a clean silhouette. Boyfriend jeans can suit any shape, but petites should avoid rolling up the legs further than the ankle and stick to the slimmer, less baggy styles.
Color and Details Matter
Jeans in a dark, even wash will have a more elongating effect than those with a lighter, faded look. Vertical fading on the front of the thighs is acceptable, however, as it will help create a longer look. Avoid jeans with elaborate detailing, such as decorative stitching or embroidery, as the extra ornament will stop the eye and interfere with a sleek silhouette. To finish the look, keep it monochrome, and pair your jeans with a top and shoes--preferably high heels--in a similar color.
