How to Embellish Denim

Denim is a versatile fabric that is available in varying shades, such as blue and black. While denim jeans, jackets, vests and shorts can be quite plain, embellishing denim clothing with rhinestones is trendy and adds sparkle to your clothing. While purchasing denim that has already been embellished can be quite expensive, you can embellish your apparel at home using an iron and hot-fix rhinestones, which are specially designed for use on fabric and can be purchased at craft stores.

Instructions

    1

Lay the article of denim clothing you wish to embellish down on your workspace. Test your fabric pencil in an inconspicuous place on the denim to be sure that is does not stain.

    2

Use the fabric pencil to draw an outline of the design you wish to embellish on the denim. Small dots are suitable for representing where you wish to affix the rhinestones. Examples of designs you could use include hearts, spirals, music notes and letters.

    3

Place your denim over an ironing board and lay the hot-fix rhinestones on the fabric in the pattern you outlined in Step 2. The flat backs of the rhinestones should be facing the denim fabric. Lay down a small section of rhinestones at a time.

    4

Turn your iron on and heat it to a low setting. Press the iron onto the hot-fix rhinestones gently to melt the glue on the back and adhere the rhinestones to the denim fabric.

    5

Repeat the process, laying down small sections of hot-fix rhinestones and attaching them using the iron, until your design is finished. Brush away any leftover fabric pencil.

    6

Add any additional embellishments you desire. Paint a design around the hot-fix rhinestones using fabric paint, in your preferred colors, and a paintbrush, or attach sparkly sequins using colored embroidery thread and a needle.
