The best jeans balance the proportion of your body's curves to help you appear taller. You can still rock the toothpick-skinny look -- the trick is to minimize bulky areas and wear the right cut to flatter larger legs with straighter, slimming features.
Streamlining Details
Conceal large calves with an all-over dark wash such as deep indigo, navy and black. Avoid embellishments that draw the eye to your legs such as splotches, rips, fading and bright stitches. Streamline your outfit with a tailored pair of jeans that feature a flattering cut around the butt, groin and knees. Avoid too-tight fits that squeeze your stomach into a muffin top or create creases around the pelvic area. Look for stretchy materials for extra room and a mid-rise jean to cinch in your waist.
Straight-Leg Jeans
Straight-leg jeans offer an easy transition from boot-cut, flared and wide-cut jeans to skinny jeans. They feature a uniform, even line from your knees to the hem and aren't as skin-tight as other styles. The relaxed shape is more forgiving for curvy hips, bigger thighs and thick calves. Try a high-rise or mid-rise cut about an inch or two under your belly button to elongate your legs.
Jeggings and Cigarette Jeans
Jean leggings -- jeggings -- are cut like skinny jeans but are made from softer, stretchier materials than rigid denim. The legging jean should be snug and lay flat against your leg. Make sure the fabric doesn't bunch up or pinch your calves. Cigarette jeans are as form-fitted as jean leggings but they don't narrow as tightly around the ankle. Skinny jeans can slim down athletic legs and high heels can show-off toned calf muscles.
How to Wear
Balance super-skinnies with a loose, light-colored top such as a long tunic. The contrast in color and shape creates an illusion of more width on top, making your legs appear thinner. Tuck skinny jeans into big boots, or hem the cuffs to show off high heels and wedges. Mix denim-on-denim with a lighter shade on top of a dark-hued jean. Or, wear a long, thin cardigan over skinny jeans for a leaner line down the body.
