How to Change Bootcut Jeans Into Skinnies

Boot cut jeans are jeans that flare out at the bottoms, so the jeans will cover boots. If you want to wear skinny jeans -- garments that have tapered hems at the ankles -- trim boot cut jeans into this thinner style with a few adaptive techniques.

Instructions

    1

Try on your jeans. Check that your jeans fit in the waist, bottom and leg areas. Wash, dry and then try on your jeans again to factor in garment shrinkage. Press your jeans with an iron to be certain that there are no wrinkles to pucker the fabric when you are sewing.

    2

Turn your jeans inside out and try them on to see where you will have to sew and cut. Pin your jeans at the desired width from the knee down. Leave room for your legs to move around. Factor in room for your feet to fit through the leg openings. Take off the jeans, turn them to the wearing side and try them on to see if the jeans fit. Repeat the steps of pinning with the inside out jeans if you are unsatisfied with the width.

    3

Turn the jeans to the non-wearing side of the garment. Mark with a fabric pencil or chalk along the path of the pins. Use the fabric chalk or pencil to give you another visual guide for your sewing. Have a marking tool that readily contrasts with the color of the jeans. Sew along the fabric chalk markings with core spun, a polyester and cotton mix, thread because it is stronger than ordinary sewing thread. Use a size 18-inch needle to sew the jeans or use a sewing machine. Double stitch the jeans at the leg openings.

    4

Cut away excess material along the jean sides. Do not cut into the fabric when you remove the excess material. Use the pins and the sewing line for your guides. Remove the pins and turn the jeans right side out. Wash and dry the jeans to remove fabric chalk.
