Keeping up with what is in fashion is likely to be expensive if you buy new clothes every season. A thrifty way to keep up with the trends without spending vast amounts of money is to alter the clothing you currently own. If you have bootcut pants that fit you well but would get more wear if they were fashionable skinnies, you only need to know how to work a sewing machine to update the pants and turn them into your favorite pair again.
Instructions
- 1
Turn the pants inside out and try them on.
2Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Pin one leg of the pants at the outside seam, starting at the lower thigh or knee area where the leg begins to flare out. Place a pin every 2 to 3 inches down the leg where you want the new outside seam to be, tapering toward the ankle. Make sure you don't make the leg opening so tight that your foot won't be able to fit through comfortably. Repeat this step on the opposite leg.
3Take off the pants. Use your sewing machine to sew a straight seam down one leg, starting at the upper portion of the leg and going down toward the ankle. Use the pins as a guide and remove them as you sew. Once you finish the first seam, turn the pants right side out again and slide your leg in to make sure it fits properly. The leg will be a little bunchy because of the excess fabric on the seam, but you should be able to get an idea of how it fits. If the leg needs to be taken in or let out, sew a new seam and then use a seam ripper to remove the old one.
4Sew the seam on the second leg the same way you sewed the first one. Use a sharp pair of scissors to trim the excess fabric from both seams, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance, and then turn the pants right side out again.
