The Best Flare Jeans

The Best Flare Jeans

Bell bottoms were designed during the first half of the 19th century as a pant that would protect sailor's bare feet while aboard a ship. Over 100 years later, in the 1960s bell bottoms appeared on the fashion circuit. They symbolized the peace movement and the transition to fun times in the 1970s disco era. Somewhere along the line they became known as "flares." No matter how often they are elbowed to the fringe of fashion, flares always make a come-back. In 2011 they have triumphed yet again over the skinny jean.

Birkin Jeans

These can be bought from designer giant Reiss. The Birkin model has a fitted waist, an easy-fit thigh with a kick-flare that starts just below the knee. A classic feature of jeans tailoring is the contrast stitch, usually in copper color thread. The Birkin model has stitched in front seams that run all the way down from the hip pockets. This make the legs look even longer and slimmer.

J-Brand Lovestory Jeans

These jeans can be bought from Net-a-porter. The J-Brand Lovestory style is a classic style of denim flares. It features a low-rise waist so that they sit just on top of the hip and emphasize the waist. They hug the thigh and flare out widely below the knee. They come in one color only: dark blue wash.

Curvy Jeans

These flares are available at all Gap stores. Unless you have a straight figure, many styles of flares do not fit right because they do not allow for curves. These Gap jeans, however, feature a flare that starts just below the knee. They are designed to keep the slim, long-legged shape of the traditional flare, while providing comfort for the curvier figure.

7 for All Mankind Georgia Jeans

7 for All Mankind Georgia jeans use strong, durable denim that keeps its shape and fades well. These jeans rise to midway between the waist and the top of the hip. They feature flat pockets at the front rather than the traditional hip pocket. Expect to pay more than $200 for a pair of 7 for All Mankind jeans, but look at it as an investment in a pair of flares that will last you a lifetime.
