When you go shopping it's easy to determine what size pants you wear when you can quickly try them on to make the determination. Unfortunately, when shopping online or through a catalog, it isn't possible to try on pants to determine your size. The best way to choose the correct pant size is to measure your proportions and use them as a basis for finding pants that fit. The worst case scenario is that you purchase a pair of pants that do not fit and have to return them for a different size.

Get out a pair of your favorite and best-fitting jeans. Use a measuring tape to determine the correct rise you need. You do this by measuring from the top of the pants to the bottom of the crotch. Make note of the length in inches.

Measure from the bottom of the crotch down the side of the pants to the bottom of the hem to determine the correct inseam. This measurement is the length of the pants you need.

Bend sideways to find the crease of your waist. The natural crease is where you want to measure yourself around to determine the correct waist size.

Stand straight with your feet together and measure the widest section of your hips. Use the measurements you obtained to determine the size of pants you need by finding your measurements on a size chart.
