Appliques are a great way to decorate your jeans, create a customized look or just cover up holes. The best part is that you don't need to be a seamstress to have some fun applying appliques to your jeans. Depending on your preference, there are a number of ways that appliques can be attached to clothing. So go wild and create the most flashy, chic or trendy jeans that you can imagine.
Instructions
Sew It On
- 1
Gather all the materials that you need, including the applique, sewing needle and thread. Ideally, the thread should match the colors on the applique. Sewing the applique onto your jeans is the most laborious and time-consuming method of attachment. If you're not a confident hand sewer, consider another method for attaching the applique.
2Thread a needle. Use enough thread to complete the project without having to re-thread more than once.
3Pull the thread through the needle until the ends are even and tie a knot.
4Make small, evenly spaced stitches along the very edge of the applique. Sew a knot occasionally to add extra stability.
5Sew until you have stitched down every edge of the applique. Make a knot and cut off the excess thread.
6Wear and wash the jeans as normal.
Glue It On
- 7
Coat the backside of the applique with applique glue.
8Place the applique carefully onto your jeans so the front of the applique is facing forward.
9Press gently down on the applique for a few seconds.
10Allow the glue to dry for several hours before folding or wearing the jeans.
11Wait to wash the newly appliqued jeans for at least three days to prevent the glue from peeling. Turn the jeans inside out during washing to prevent the applique from falling off.
Iron It On
- 12
Ensure that you purchased an iron-on applique. Only specially made appliques can be ironed on as most appliques must be attached using glue or a needle and thread.
13Turn your iron to its highest setting and let it warm up. Place your jeans on the ironing board.
14Position the applique on your jeans at the desired location and cover it with a scrap of cloth.
15Press the iron firmly onto the applique and cloth for 35 seconds.
16Turn the jeans inside out and lay back down on the ironing board.
17Find the location of the applique and cover that area with the scrap of cloth.
18Press the iron firmly onto the inside of the jeans for 35 seconds over the applique.
19Let the applique cool down before folding or wearing.
20Turn the jeans inside out before washing to prevent the applique from falling off.
