Jeans with wider cuffs are easier to get on and off and make your leg look longer. It is frustrating when your favorite pair of jeans fit everywhere except around the ankle; tight cuffs are restrictive and uncomfortable. If you do not want a tailor to let out the cuffs of your jeans, do it yourself with a few household items.
Instructions
- 1
Cut the seam on one side of the jeans beginning from the bottom of the cuff up through the area you want wider. For example, if you want to widen the cuff starting just above your ankle, cut all the way to that point. If you want to make a decorative cuff, cut the outside seam. If you want to keep your work hidden, cut the inside seam.
2Opt to sew additional material into the jeans to create a more natural look, or add ribbon for an interesting braided effect on the side of your leg. For a more natural look, choose extra jean material that matches the color of your jeans.
3Sew the additional material into the cut seams. Use more material to give the jeans a bell-bottom effect and less material to slightly loosen them. While this will create a "V" shape in the new cuff, turn the jeans inside out and sew the matching material in a neat, straight line to better hide the addition. If you want a more colorful look, sew colored material into the cuff.
4Cut tiny holes only a few centimeters apart, just large enough to push the ribbon through, if you choose the braided option. Lace the seams back together as if lacing a shoe, laying the ribbon flat to close the opening of the seams. While this won't make the cuffs a lot wider, it will loosen them about an inch, depending on how tight you pull the ribbon.
5Finish lacing the ribbon at the bottom of the cuff with a bow, and either leave it outside the cuff for decoration or tuck it under the bottom of the cuff.
