How to Make Cutoffs Like in the 70s

Daisy Duke, a popular television character from the hit television show "Dukes of Hazard," made a fashion statement with her short shorts in the 1970s. Women everywhere wanted to look like her and dared to wear the tiny shorts. They became known as Daisy Dukes, named after her character. Making your own cutoffs requires almost no tools and only takes a few minutes. Dig in the back of your closet for an old pair of jeans and turn them into a vintage fashion statement in no time.

Instructions

    1

Put on your jeans and use a marker to mark one inch or so below where you want to make the cut. Look in the mirror to make the cut, don't bend over to do this or the cut may be higher up than where you originally want it.

    2

Take off the pants and fold them in half equally. Use measuring tape to draw a line all the way around the pant leg. Draw the mark slightly higher on the side of the leg to give them a 70's feel.

    3

Cut carefully from your mark all the way around, through both sides of the pants. Avoid cutting the pocket, you may want to turn the pants inside-out to make the cut.

    4

Wash your pants separately in the washing machine on a regular cycle one or two times. This will help to fray the ends of the shorts.

    5

Use sandpaper up and down on the front center of the shorts for a more vintage look. Don't scrape too hard or you will create a hole.
